Dropout Rate

Annual percentage of students who dropped out of school.

The annual dropout rate is the percentage of students in grades 9 through 12 who exited school during a given school year without transferring to another school or educational program. Students are identified as dropouts based on the exit withdrawal code reported by the district. The rate is calculated by dividing the number of students with a dropout exit code between July 1 and June 30 of the school year by the total end-of-year enrollment for grades 9 through 12.

This measure covers departures within a single school year. It is a distinct calculation from the graduation cohort dropout rate, which tracks students over four, five, or six years after entering grade 9. Dropout data is reported based on the school a student attends.
